(1986-1989)
The Beginning
Spencer’s Ventura Mattress was founded by Spencer Simcik, a young entrepreneur who, at 21, decided to venture into the mattress business. He opened his first store in Oxnard, California, in 1986. With a background in customer service at a small furniture store, Spencer saw an opportunity to specialize exclusively in mattresses, a niche market at the time. His focus on quality and customer service quickly built a loyal clientele.
(1990-1993)
Expansion and Innovation
As his business grew, Spencer opened additional stores and began manufacturing custom mattresses. His expertise and innovative approach led him to design and distribute his own brand, Churchill & Smith, using high-quality raw materials to offer superior products at competitive prices. Spencer’s understanding of the mattress industry, coupled with his design and innovation skills, allowed him to consult with top-level brands and continually improve his products.
(1991-2002)
Marketing and Growth
Spencer’s creative marketing strategies, including eye-catching ad campaigns, helped expand his business significantly. By maintaining clean showrooms and a large inventory, he ensured immediate customer satisfaction. This approach led to the opening of 22 independently owned stores nationwide, each benefiting from Spencer’s vision and leadership.
(2003-2010)
Embracing Health Trends
Recognizing a shift towards health-conscious consumers, Spencer researched and developed mattresses that promote better sleep and overall health. His travels to Sweden, the “sleep capital of the world,” educated him about using natural materials like cotton, wool, and latex to improve sleep quality by enhancing spinal alignment and temperature regulation. Spencer’s focus on creating a healthy sleep environment included the innovative use of materials such as gel-infused foam and hybrid designs combining foam and spring technology.
(2011-2017)
Commitment to Quality
Spencer continued to disrupt the industry by focusing on education and quality over sales. He emphasized the importance of natural materials and proper sleep environments, leading to the production of between 800 and 1,000 Churchill & Smith mattresses annually. Additionally, Spencer’s Ventura Mattress expanded into custom sheets and bedding, ensuring that customers could complete their sleep environment with high-quality, perfectly fitting accessories. The company also developed a successful wholesale pillow business, selling over 14,000 pillows in two years.

This initiative leverages Spencer’s decades of expertise in mattress design and his commitment to using only the finest materials. Spencer’s Custom Mattress offers an unparalleled level of customization, including options for any size, shape, thickness, and feel. This new business also specializes in creating custom mattresses for RVs and boats, ensuring that customers can enjoy superior sleep quality no matter where they are.
Present Day
Today, Spencer’s Custom Mattress remains a family-run business, blending cutting-edge technology with modern equipment to achieve mass customization of sleep products. Spencer and his team are dedicated to staying at the forefront of mattress innovation, using the latest materials and styles, such as cool fabrics, gel-infused foam, and hybrid designs that combine foam and spring technology. By integrating advanced manufacturing techniques with traditional craftsmanship, they ensure that every mattress meets the highest standards of quality and comfort.
